HYDERABAD, Aug 5 — An Indian-flagged cargo vessel sank in the Red Sea after being hit by a projectile near Yemeni waters on Tuesday.
All 14 seafarers on board the MSV Faize Noore Oliya, including 13 Indians, were rescued by the Yemeni Coast Guard and brought to the Port of Mokha, India’s Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said in a post on the social media platform X.
“I have instructed the Director General Maritime Administration (DGMA) to take immediate steps, in coordination with all agencies, to ensure the absolute security of Indian seafarers in the region and provide all necessary assistance to the rescued crew,” he said.
The Yemeni Transport Ministry blamed the Houthi forces for the incident, saying an explosives-laden boat was used in the attack in the Red Sea.
India’s External Affairs Ministry, in a statement, condemned the attack.
“The continuing incidents of attacks on commercial shipping in the region are deeply worrisome. The targeting of commercial shipping in the region must end, and free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through the international waterways in the region, in keeping with international law, must be restored at the earliest,” it said.
