JAKARTA, July 14– Indonesia has expressed its readiness to host dialogue between the conflicting parties in Myanmar if chosen to do so, Foreign Minister Sugiono said on Tuesday.
He said the move reflected Indonesia’s support for reconciliation efforts in Myanmar, where achieving lasting peace requires dialogue involving all stakeholders.
“We are ready if Indonesia is chosen to host it. I think Indonesia is also more acceptable for that position,” he said, according to Antara News Agency.
Sugiono said Indonesia’s readiness was conveyed during the Informal ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with Myanmar in Bangkok on Sunday, where the ministers discussed developments in Myanmar and the implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus (5PC).
He said every step forward towards achieving peace in Myanmar should be welcomed, while acknowledging that the complexity of the situation meant implementation of the 5PC would take time.
The foreign minister said implementation of the 5PC continued to face various challenges, with one of the most critical being the establishment of an inclusive dialogue involving all stakeholders amid the country’s ongoing civil war.
Adopted by ASEAN leaders in April 2021, the 5PC serves as the bloc’s roadmap for addressing the Myanmar crisis through an end to violence, inclusive dialogue and humanitarian assistance, among other measures.
