Iranian Forces Fire Warning Shots at 4 Vessels Near Strait of Hormuz

ISTANBUL, May 29 —  Iran’s armed forces fired warning shots at four vessels near the Strait of Hormuz after they attempted to pass through the strategic waterway without coordination, Anadolu Ajansi reported, citing Mehr News Agency on late Thursday.

The Iranian news outlet did not provide any details on the vessels.

Iran’s Fars News Agency reported earlier that the military launched missiles from the country’s south toward “specified targets,” though the exact targets were not identified.

Fars said some sources pointed to possible clashes in the waters of the Gulf.

Meanwhile, Iranian state television reported that explosions heard in the city of Jam in the southern province of Bushehr were caused by air defence systems confronting hostile aerial targets.

The broadcaster had earlier reported an explosion in the city before saying that air defences had intercepted hostile aerial objects.

Tensions in West Asia have escalated since the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran in late February.

Tehran retaliated with attacks targeting Israel as well as US allies in the Gulf, alongside the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire took effect on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, but subsequent talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement. US President Donald Trump later extended the truce indefinitely.

The two sides have since continued exchanging proposals and counterproposals in an effort to resume direct talks and end the conflict.
