WASHINGTON, June 26 — The United States (US) on Thursday pledged US$150 million in assistance to Venezuela after it was hit by two earthquakes, the US Department of State said, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.
Two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude struck Venezuela on Wednesday.
They were followed by 30 aftershocks. At least 180 people were killed and more than 1,000 others were injured. Many homes were destroyed.
“In addition to immediate search and rescue, airlift and coordination support, the US is mobilising US$150 million in assistance to Venezuela through our assistance partners,” the department said in a statement.
The US has also deployed two urban search and rescue teams from the fire departments of Fairfax County, Virginia, and Los Angeles County, California, the department added.
