KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 — Consumers are placing greater emphasis on quality, craftsmanship and design when purchasing diamond jewellery, reflecting changing preferences that extend beyond the origin of the stone, according to BEON Diamond.
Its co-founder, Gary Ng, said buyers today are increasingly considering factors such as certification, cut, clarity, carat weight and overall design, rather than focusing solely on whether a diamond is mined or lab-grown.
He said customers are making more informed purchasing decisions based on quality, personal preference and the overall appeal of a jewellery piece.
“Customers are asking more considered questions about certification, cut quality, design suitability and overall craftsmanship before making a purchase,” he said in a statement.
While mined diamonds continue to hold appeal because of their rarity, tradition and natural origin, consumers are increasingly assessing a diamond’s value based on quality, craftsmanship, transparency and personal meaning, he noted.
Ng also said that lab-grown diamonds possess the same physical, chemical and optical properties as mined diamonds, with the key distinction being how they are created.
According to him, mined diamonds are formed naturally beneath the earth’s surface, while lab-grown diamonds are produced in controlled laboratory environments using advanced technology.
For many modern buyers, particularly younger couples and individual buyers, he said, lab-grown diamonds are no longer viewed as a compromise but rather as an option that allows them to prioritise quality, design and personal expression.
In fact, he said the value of jewellery extends beyond the diamond itself, noting that craftsmanship, finishing and thoughtful design all contribute to the overall appeal of a piece.
“A diamond is the material, while jewellery is the craft. What makes a piece timeless is not only where the diamond comes from, but how it is brought to life,” he added.
