Tamil Nadu New CM Thanks Anwar For Greetings, Seeks Closer Ties With Malaysia

HYDERABAD, May 12 — Tamil Nadu’s new chief minister C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his greetings and said he is committed to build warmer ties with Malaysia.

The 51-year-old popular Tamil movie star-turned-politician said he was “deeply honoured by the warm congratulations” from the Malaysian leader.

“Thank you for your gracious gesture. I am committed to fostering greater cooperation and enhancing the bond of friendship between Tamil Nadu and Malaysia,” Vijay said in a post on X.

Vijay was sworn in as the southern Indian state’s chief minister on Sunday following his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party’s victory in the assembly elections held in April.

Earlier, Anwar congratulated the new chief minister and commended his electoral performance.

“I warmly congratulate my friend Vijay on being elected Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu,” the prime minister said in a post on X on Tuesday.

“For many years, his adoring fans watched him defeat corrupt politicians and assorted villains within three hours, usually after a short interval. The people of Tamil Nadu have now entrusted Vijay with a responsibility far greater than any role performed on-screen,” he added.

Malaysia and Tamil Nadu share deep historical, cultural, and people-to-people ties across generations, Anwar said, adding that he looks forward to working closely with Vijay in the years ahead.
